Ontario Turkey Burrito Bowl


All the elements of your favourite burrito assembled in a healthy and colourful one-dish meal.


1-1/2 lb (750 g) ground Ontario turkey
1 onion, chopped
1 sweet red pepper, chopped
seasoning mix (recipe below)
1/4 cup (60 mL) water
1/2 cup cilantro, chopped
6 cups cooked rice, white or brown
1 can (14 oz/398 mL) red kidney beans, warmed
1 jalapeño, sliced
3 cups (750 mL) cheddar cheese, shredded, divided
1 tomato, chopped
2 cups (500 mL) lettuce, shredded
1 ripe avocado, sliced

seasoning mix

2 tbsp (30 mL) chili powder
1 tbsp (15 mL) dried oregano
1 tbsp (15 mL) ground cumin
1/2 tsp (2 mL) cayenne pepper or dried red chili flakes



Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add turkey, onion and red pepper, cook breaking up meat with spoon until no longer pink, 6 to 8 minutes. Stir in seasoning mix and water; bring to a boil; simmer 5 minutes or until liquid is reduced. Mix chopped cilantro in with rice and divide among individual serving bowls. Top with desired amount of kidney beans, jalapeño, cheese, tomato, lettuce, avocado and ground turkey mixture.
